I have counted Shirley as a friend since I was a teenager when she was my brother’s fiancée, sixty-five years ago. We did not always agree politically but that never dented our friendship or my admiration for her family centred values and calm strength of purpose. In the past few weeks her wonderful and loving family gathered around her from near and far; a true testimony to a life lived to the full by those values.
